Hexacosanol is often used as a nutritional supplement with other long chain fatty alcohols such as octacosanol. Experiments in animals indicated that Hexacosanol had a strong induction on neuronal maturation, showing an important neuroprotective effect. In contrast, Tetracosanols and Triacontanol show no such activity, while Octacosanol shows light activity. Hexacosanol can significantly slow down the degeneration of choline neurons. It is believed that the exogenous control of long chain fatty alcohol produces the nutritional effects on the nerves in the body, and it is concluded that low doses of the compound may help reduce cell loss in some neurodegenerative disorders such as Alzheimer's disease or stroke.
